Rambles on a Sunday

Well, I worked three days of the last week of school, and I needed every hour to get over the 630 hours needed for EI. Whew! Thank gawd for St. Andrew's Elementary, a nice little school next to MUN. There is an article in The Telegram today, about St. Andrew's. Click here to read.

In Saturday's paper, The Telegram had an article about poor customer service by companies in rural Newfoundland. It really is a two-tiered system sometimes. My wife is from Red Cliff, next to Tickle Cove (beautiful communities) and the satillite service is terrible. But since people don't have access to cable TV and high speed Internet (things I take for granted here in Mt. Pearl), they are at the mercy of others.

Personally, I believe Mr. Kelly (person in the article) should get his system hooked up for free, the the lad who "didn't want to drive all that way" should be fired.

Had a little too much to drink last night at my ball hockey social. I even ended up playing darts and hitting the winning shots. MUST have been the booze. So today I am suffering, and the dog is wanting attention. Is it wrong I have her put outside, to relax in the sun.........and dig holes in the lawn? Nah. Wife is planning to fix up garden tomorrow anyway. :)

Red Cliff

I just spent the weekend out with the inlaws, wife, and dog in Red Cliff. She is out there till Thursday, enjoying her well-deserved holidays (from work, and possibly me).

I always enjoy my time in that small community in Bonavista Bay South. It reminds me of my childhood travels to Barr'd Islands on Fogo Island, the scenery is breathtaking, and the pace of life is much more mellow. Take a look.

This past weekend the weather was great, and icebergs were all about. A simple picture can't give it justice. But I'll post some once wife gets film developed. Trinity gets all the attention on Bonavista peninsula, but slowly people are buying and building cottages in this area. This past weekend there were pics of the iceberg in Open Hall in The Telegram. It is where we got hitched. Beautiful church. It is celebrating its 100 year anniversary in 2008. Here is a pic of the inside.

Ah, shameless promotion.

Using Spell Check

Again, Taylor Mali. Enjoy.

Teaching

Right now I am full of emotions because of the profession I love - teaching.

The school year is coming to an end next week and at the moment I don't have enough sub days for a new EI claim. I am about 2 days short so it is a crap shoot if I get it.

Today I found out a couple of jobs I applied for were filled. The school district policy is that I need 15 MONTHS of REPLACEMENT time in THEIR board just to be interviewed in the Spring. Considering I only have 4 months in this district (and sub days don't count), my only chance is catching a break during the next school year, even for out around the bay gigs.

So even if I am 'gettin' more educated' doing my Masters part-time, it doesn't matter. As for my current courses, blah. I am looking forward to the September semester already.

But still, I enjoy teaching. Not dealing with behaviour shit or the politics of it, but making connections with the kids. So here is a link I found on youtube, which made me smile. Enjoy.

New Pictures

Wife got some film developed this past week. We took a walk around Cape Spear last weekend, out to see the icebergs, along with many others. Quite a few Europeans and Asian folks milling about. Even saw one Asian guy carrying a garbage bag full of ice. The nut climbed down the cliff and got himself some "bergy bits."

It seems like it is a decent season for icebergs, after a couple of poor years. Either way, a picture doesn't do it justice after standing on the shoreline, with the cold wind hitting you.

I like naps. So do our dog. Wife took this one a while back. The dog's ears have stopped growing. I think.

Mr. Hearn's survey

Conservative MP Hearn has been getting a lot of heat lately for so-called "supporting the federal government over his own province." Anyone against Danny is now considered 'da enemy' and I wouldn't want to be in their shoes.

I think Hearn's stance is that it is better to have someone bat for your team (no matter how many times s/he strikes out) than to have no one swinging at all. Touchy indeed.

So I was not surprised when Telelink called me yesterday, asking about my opinion of Mr. Hearn, whether he did the right thing, would I support him, yada yada yada. I basically replied that since I don't know who is going to run against him in the next federal election, it is a moot question. Plus, this latest dust-up may well be forgiven and forgotten by the time 'Steve' calls the next election.

Danny is calling for ABC in the next election, and the latest results show the PCs dancing into another clear provincal majority. Interesting times. I think Mr. Hearn will have to do something more than a survey to save his own skin.

7 Wonders of Canada

Well, the 7 wonders of Canada have been selected. And to no surprise, none from Newfoundland and Labrador made it.

See: http://www.cbc.ca/sevenwonders/

I have no argument with Niagara Falls, the Rockies, the Prairie skies (much nicer to look at than what is below it - drive 8 hours from Thompson to Winnipeg and get back to me), and even Old Quebec City.

But the canoe and igloo over Cape Spear, Gros Morne National Park, and Signal Hill?

C'mon. I am not a camper, but I was overwhelmed by the scenery at Gros Morne. From the Tablelands, fjords, and hiking that blasted mountain, it is breath-taking. Just look at my header, it is a pic of my wife and I on the top of the mountain, striking a pose - and trying not to pass out. ha

Anyway, it is all a popularity contest in some aspect. With our small population, how can we expect to make the list of 7 when we can't make a NFer a Canadian Idiot, I mean, Idol?

Such a vast and diverse country. It's a good thing.
