Its Xmas time. Ho ho ho. $$$

I'm not a big fan of what Christmas has become - getting the latest fad to make the kids happy. I am NOT a religious person, but Santa has replaced baby Jesus as the main symbol a LONG time ago.

Christmas for me is a time to relax, reflect, and spend time with loved ones and friends. Not spending time at the Avalon mall looking for stocking stuffers and fighting for parking spaces.

On Friday some of my students gave me gifts. It was sweet. I had bought them book coupons, pens, and candy canes. But I told them to reward the music teacher (who also teaches them 1/2 time) instead of me, because she had spent hours practicing for the Christmas concert (which went great). Instead, they bought presents for both of us. I reminded them before they left to enjoy their time with family and remember that the season is not only about getting presents. Hopefully it will sink in.

I had the intention this year to take the $$ I would have spent on gifts and buy grub for a food bank. But considering the sadness my wife was going through with the recent passing of her father, I decided getting her trinkets and presents would put a smile on her face.

Tomorrow may be a bittersweet day here in Red Cliffe, but seeing my wife go through her stocking anf gifts is better than telling her I spent 300 bucks on Kraft Dinner for local food banks!

Losing a Loved One

On December 2nd my father-in-law Carl Bowen passed away after battling cancer for more than a year. Even though I only knew him for 5 years, and I didn't feel that we had that much in common, I can honestly say he is the best man I have ever met.

When you hear the phrase "a good fellow" or "would do anything for anybody" it related to him. He was also low-key, but full of humour and wisdom to his wife, daughter, family and friends. During his wake and funeral, the tiny church in the community of Red Cliffe was full of people whose lives he had touched across the province.

I can only hope to be as good as husband, father, and friend as Carl. And love my profession as much as he did. Keep on truckin' Carl. We'll certainly miss your desserts!

Here are a few pictures to honour his memory:

Happy Birthday Chantel

Today my 'baby' sister turned 25. I took her out for nachos and wings at Don Cherry's. Yup, the big $$$! ha

I still remember the moment my uncle Cliff told me I had another sister. I already had one, I wanted a brother. So I did what any upset 9 year old would do - I fell to the carpet and started bawling and hitting the floor.

I think I'm over it.

When Chantel was really young, she was the sister I got along with better. With Charlene only being 3 years younger than me, we fought. A lot.

Chantel still tells people I use to body slam her on the bed and bar her in my room, forcing her to listen to G'n'R's Appetite for Destruction. Wasn't that the duty of all big brothers? :)

As for her teenage years...we weren't so close (:( But now that she is more sensible, we can tolerate each other! haha

Whenever people say we look 'just like each other' (and we do) she is in complete denial. Face it sis, ya look just like your (handsome) big brother!

At least I made her a U2 fan!

Here is our latest family pic, sans wife, taken in August.

The Word is Out

In Saturday's edition of The Telegram, there was a write-up in the 'NL Life' section about my wife's childhood community, Red Cliff.

In Open Hall there are some cabins being built with an excellent view of the bay. Smart move on the business owners I say, because since 2002 I have noticed more and more old buildings being refurbished, or even new cottages being built.

Usually it is the Trinity side of the Bonavista Peninsula that gets all the press. As a result, land gets bought up and money is spent in the surrounding communities. Of course, as I see land and older houses being 'snapped up' by townies or CFAers, I sit on the fence - is this a good thing?

Economically it is, because it keeps the little shops going. With good word of mouth, more people will come.

But as the 'foreigners' integrate the little communities, prices of land and houses may go up. A 'local' may feel pressured to sell sections of land because his/her children are in Fort Mac, not planning to come home. But when informed of the idea, the children feel slighted.

"Dad, I can't believe you're selling pop's land. I thought us kids were going to have that, and we could build a cabin on it for the times I come home."

Home. It is where your heart is. Not where your feet land.

Running on Empty

It is report card time. And end of semester time. I have not been getting much sleep lately. With my Masters courses over next week, it will certainly give me more time to spend with wife............and dog!

I have been ignoring my blog. Each day I hear something on the radio or see something on the telly that I want to put my '2 cents worth.' So I have a list:

1) Should Parents Pay for Damages Their Kids Create?
Yes and no. In some instances the parents may be trying the best that they can, and the kid will not listen. Bill the kid, and when she/he begins to work (hopefully) in the future, they will look at their pay stub and say, "Oh yeah, that money comes out for the time I broke into the corner store."
If some parents got a bill from their kids vandalism, a bit of a 'beat down' may happen. So then child abuse is a problem. I am not going to get into the 'poor can't afford it and don't care anyway' debate. Cause I just don't believe it.

2) Smoking in Cars.
In Wolfville, NS, the local government has passed a law, stating that it is now illegal to smoke in YOUR OWN car if a child under 18 is aboard. This one is getting a lot of press. Great idea, more headache for cops and court. Coming from a non-smoker's POV, I think this a good law. I wonder what is the co-relation to people who speed, don't wear seat belts, AND smoke? Rebels, I say!

3) Should Canadian Olympic Athletes get paid for winning a medal?
Why not? Other countries have been doing this for years, and many of our athletes need to work part time as they train. This is like the carrot dangling in front of the donkey. It will get them to run faster. Hopefully their cleats won't tangle up in any hurdles as they run through China's smog!

Now, I must try to finish report card comments!

Mom's Day

Happy birthday mom! I hope it doesn't rain too much in Berens River on your special day! Hopefully dad brought you something special from the Northern! haha

Here is a picture from my days living with cousin Dave in the late 90's:

Everyone tells me that I am 'just like my father' but I think I got mom's looks!

A Special Day

Today is my beautiful wife's birthday!
I miss her terribly because I am in the city and she is out around the bay.

Here is the latest 'snap' of both of us:

Casey Pictures

When I walked through my inlaw's door on Friday evening, Casey was excited to see me. Then she quickly became a 'mommy-sook' for the rest of the weekend. sigh.

When it wasn't rainning, I was chasing her, to give her some exercise. She found a straw and starting chewing, daring me to take it from her.

My inlaws burn wood, and their house is quite toasty. Casey has started to lay about the furnace, even getting into the 'woodbox.'

Here is an older picture....

Life isn't rough for this little mutt out around da bay!

More Pictures of Red Cliff

I just got back from visiting my wife, who is staying with her parents due to her dad's illness. It was a long drive alone, both ways, but it was worth it. Now I am back to reality - school work, report cards, and Masters papers!

My father-in-law got his moose last week. The sauages were yummy!

I found this picture on inlaw's computer! I think the bottles are in 'da old house.'

A Beautiful Out Around the Bay Day

Out to Red Cliff for the weekend. The drive out was painful; in the rain and darkness. But today makes up for it. The sun is shining and I was out walking doggy in a t-shirt.

Doggy was certainly enjoying herself. She a)found a dead field mouse in the tall grass and brought it to me; b)ran to the beach to eat/lick fish guts and bones; and c)starting growling and yapping at the neighbour's BIG husky that was roaming around our door.

Certainly different than her usual Mt. Pearl surroundings.

Me, I am mostly inside, working on Masters work. It is officially 'crunch' time, with report cards and 4 papers due before the end of this month. Lordy.

First Snow

Woke up early this morning. Ok, the DOG woke me up early this morning, needing a trip outside to do her business.

Seeing the snow on the ground and the blue jays hopping about was nice. Seeing my dog run like da-beejesus, scaring the birds was funny...until she wouldn't come back in and I had brib her with treats. She is developing an attitude!

School was a bit loud and crazy today. No teaching, just managing madness. Work shop tomorrow!

Back to school work!

Update

For my few blog followers, I'm sorry that I have not been 'blogging.'

Teaching going ok, kids are fine. Lots of correcting to do, for report cards are fast approaching.

Masters is hectic. Going ok, so far.

Started ice hockey again. Broke expensive hockey stick! But yesterday wife and I were out twacking (looking at stuff and not buying it) and I decided to get a new stick. I got a pretty blue one. haha

Got a daily subscription to Globe and Mail. Me happy. So on Fridays I get the Globe, Telegram AND the Independent. Lots of reading!! Apparently the dog and my lovely wife feels ignored on Friday evenings. hehe

Waking up Free

How do you think Gerry Reid really feels this morning? I bet he is a relieved man, thinking, "I'm out! I'm finally out!"

The man gave it the good ol' college try, but the little slingshot this modern day David had (rural voters) was useless against the latest Goliath - Teflon Dan da man.

With three sitting members, the Liberals have a long three years ahead of them. At least they won't be fighting each other for minutes during Question Period. The list of questions they will receive from unions and groups alone will be long enough!!

So now the local vultures are circling. Mr. Efford is already on the local radio, informing us that he is willing to "'elp da par-day" get back on its feet. Mmmm, I don't think the grassroots will help you this time John.

What about Mr. Dicks? Was paying back the art/booze/underwear/whatever a sincere gesture? Or was it his first step in attaining the Liberal leadership?

As for the NDPers out there, keep dreaming.

Back in Town & Thoughts

I enjoy long weekends. If my wife is off then it means a trip around the bay to the clear smell of the ocean and home cookin'!

So I am full of turkey...........and gas. Wife is already complaining. I don't see the point. It is an act of nature. ;)

Tomorrow is D-day for the Liberals in Newfoundland. King (or does Emperor sound better?) Danny, not his candidates, will probably get 44 seats. And I doubt Gerry and Lorraine will keep their seats.

Long live the king? And I'm not talking about Elvis.

The End of September

September is over already. Teaching is going OK; I have a very good class. Masters courses are very interesting, but it is going to get heavy over the next two weeks as I have 2 papers due.

So I must ignore Facebook. (!)

Provincial election is underwhelming. Daily paper full of articles on how Businessman Dan is loved and Grumpy Gerry is on his last legs. I am not a PC, but how can Gerry blame 'Danny's Team' for rural neglect after 4 years of rule (hehe) after the Liberals were in power for over a decade? My my, how quickly one can forget.

I read the anonymous letter sent in by an ER nurse to Meeker's Media blog. Very nasty indeed. But being married to an ER nurse (no, she didn't write the letter) I can tell you there is much truth in what was written. But I doubt anything will change....!

Finally got some pictures developed, taken in August and September. Here is the most recent family photo, sans wife and pet:

Here is another wedding picture - Chris with his beautiful wife, purple shirt, and double chin:

Giving in...

I have joined FaceBook. People are shocked.

But I DO have an excuse - I am doing a Popular Culture course and may use my FaceBook experience to write a personal narrative on society, culture, learning, yada yada yada

Or I may just use my blogging experience. Prefer that at the moment. Must go check out all my 'friends' on Facebook that I have not seen in years!

Da Election

Is there any point?

Coming home from one of my Masters courses, I listened to Danny and Gerry duke it out, while Lorraine was booing from the sidelines. Managed to turn on the telly to see the last few minutes..........poor Gerry looked flustered while Danny was as cool as a Sprung cucumber.

If the Liberals get 4 seats on Oct 9th I will be shocked. Danny came along at the right time (oil $$) and is running the government like a business. Sure, he is stepping on many toes as he streamlines decisions (what I say goes) but is gaining popularity with each new section of road paved.

Our province will need a strong opposition to keep Danny in check. By that, I mean nipping at his heels with questions as he stomps nay-sayers in his shiny black shoes (with possible lifts?).

I will vote on the 9th. If I don't I do not have the right to complain. Or blog.

Getting Back Into Her Good Graces

My (lovely) wife worked Friday. When she got home about 8ish, I told her I was going out to play cards.

Strike one.

She didn't want me to go, because she knew the dog was going to fret, waiting for me to come home. But she also knew I wanted to go, so I went.

The cards went well, so I didn't get home till 12:40.

Strike two.

Apparently the dog did not settle down till 12:30, so my wife couldn't sleep. When I slid into bed, wife declared, "no need to be quiet, I'm awake" in a cold tone. Being the sweet guy that I am, I began to caress her back. That was short lived, as my (lovely) wife said (in a firm voice), "Don't...touch...me. I'm crook'ed."

No shit.

To make matters worse, the dog had the shits and I had to get up repeatedly to let her out, or endure more stains on the carpet.

So on Saturday I a)brought wife a fancy coffee and treat from Starbucks; b)bought grub; c)cleaned up the house; and d)bought flowers, arranged them, and displayed them on the table. (I totally ignored the newspaper AND my masters readings)

Safe at home!! I got a smile, a kiss, and maybe even a cooked meal on Monday! ha

Now I just have to suffer through HER choice of movie. We watched 'Hot Fuzz' Thursday night. I enjoyed it. She hated it. Wife said we are going to watch 'Because I Said So' next. How fitting.........!

6 Years Later...

Each generation can recall an event in their life and tell where they were and what they were doing. For my father, it was hearing that JFK was killed in 1963. For me, it was learning of the horror of 9/11.

I was subbing at a school just outside of Gander. I just finished my lunch duty and walked into the staff room and a bunch of shocked faces and asked what had happened. When I was told, my first response was, "Gander is going to be nuts."

By, was I ever right. For several days people just walked the streets of Gander or sat in front of TVs, waiting to learn when they were going to get home and see their loved ones.

I did a little bit, buying some grub and taking to a church. I have NEVER seen so much food in my life. But I think the 'plane people' were more shocked than hungry.

6 years later our little province has gained a little fame and tourist fortune from that terrible day. But the cost was too much.

As for the 'hunt on terror' by GWB, I'll leave that for another post.

A Busy September

The Combden clan is busy: Younger sister is about to start school (again! just like me :)) in the LPN program, dad and mom are settling in at Beren's River in Manitoba, where dad is back at being a principal after a two year break, and I am starting a new job and my Masters courses on Tuesday.

I dropped by my new place of work yesterday, looking for teacher resources and chatting to fellow co-workers. I subbed at the school a lot last year, so I am quite comfortable there.

Since I am only half time, I am sharing the class with two other teachers and they are teaching Math, Science, etc. We need to get together to organize the class. They have been doing this quite a bit longer than me, so I'll be taking their advice.

It is an early Sunday morning. Already I my second cup of java as I prep my brain for teaching grade 5. Oh my.

Thursday, August 30

I Got a Job!

Took the dog out for a short walk yesterday. When I got back my wife asked, "Are you interested in a half time job at St. Andrew's?" with a BIG grin on her face.

I called the principal, we had a chat. She offered me a replacement position for the year teaching Grade 5. English, Soc St., Health, and French. Yes, French. I have already bought some books to get the rust outta my brain! ha

Apparently it is madness for many of the administration for hiring. No sh*t. It's not even a week before school opens!!

So I am enjoying my last couple of days of doing little next to nothing. On Tuesday BOTH my job and Masters courses begin again. Time again to sorta ignore me wife. But not the dog. Doggy whines a lot more. ha

Fast cars & ATVs

I had a quad growing up in the late 80's. But it was small and certainly much less powerful than the ATVs bootin' around these days.

Yes, there were times I did not wear my helmet, and times I drove on the road, but I was never reckless. My father would have tanned my butt if he found out I was.

This summer has been depressing with all the people getting killed or seriously hurt. With the improved highways, are people driving faster? With the faster quads, are the younger drivers taking more chances?

I know there are age restrictions on the ATVs. But how closely are they being followed? Apparently the public is split on whether parents should be charged if their kids caused an accident. At this point my opinion is "Yes, they should."

But our culture is so soft, giving so many chances, with individuals not having to pay back the damages they create to businesses and individuals. Everything seems so "kid-centered" with parents having a hard time saying "no" and sticking to their convictions.

I consider myself to be very liberal minded, but when it comes to people doing crimes and causing damage, especially when they are young, I don't feel as liberal. People need to learn that actions have consequences.

For Better or for Worse

Every day one of the first web sites I visit is the 'For Better or for Worse' comic by Lynn Johnston. I have been reading it for as long as I can remember.

Unfortunately the artist is semi-retiring in the Fall. CBC has an article on its web site today: http://www.cbc.ca/arts/media/johnston.html

I'll miss the daily interactions of the Patterson family. Especially between big brother Mike and his two younger sisters. I have bugged my sisters just as much! ha

Later.

Sunday, August 19

Ramblings....!

Now that I have a bit more free time between semesters, I'll post some thoughts
1) New Pavement:
It is much more relaxing driving on the TCH this summer, with major work completed. With 'da ruts' gone, ya don't need a death grip on the wheel as much. ;) Plus, you can get to your destination faster. Last week Pitts Memorial Drive finally got redone. Praise Jesus. But only days later a section was tore up for cables, pipes, or something. Sigh. I foresee a nasty bump in the road next Spring. Hopefully there will be more 'Danny Dollars' for rural Newfoundland roads. Yes people, there still are a FEW baymen out there, hitting the potholes.

2) Dennis Normore or Mr. Pay Dearly
Ok, has anyone else noticed that this Danny-wannabe's last name of Normore is close to 'no more'? As in:
"No more BS, elect me and we might get new pavement!" or
"No more lies, I just wanna be on the Danny bandwagon!" or
"The Liberals are 'no more' likely to win the next provincal election than the Leafs winning the Stanley Cup, so vote for me!"

Do I need to go on? No more (pun intended) examples needed. I'm sure, if Dennis gets elected even after speaking his mind clearly (the lad has balls), he will be in back, back benches. But c'mon people, wasn't he at least honest?

3) Overworked Nurses
I am married to a nurse. Lovely girl. Been with her since the summer of 02. This summer the phone has rang every day she had off because of the nursing shortage. It is crazy, 6:15am calls, with co-workers practically begging for her to 'come in' for a shift to afternoon calls, wanting her to come in for a few hours.
This issue is finally getting some 'news time' but I don't think it will resolved soon.
The public have to realize a nurse just can't start a job in a new unit, they have to be trained. Also, with this being summer, there won't be transfers between units until the Fall. Then there is the $$ issue. Enough said.

6 Down, 4 to Go

On Friday morning I was surfing the web and decided to check MUN's site to see if my marks were posted. "Holy Sh*t!" was my response when I saw that I got 90% on my Computers course and 80% on my Writing course.

Considering that I didn't have a sweet clue what I had going into my Computers course (due to a prof that was...less than communicative)I was HAPPY. As for my Writing course, my reflective final must have been decent, 'cause I was going in with a mid-70. So far I have a 85 average in my Masters courses. Only if my undergrad average was the same! haha

I'll never do 2 online courses again. In fact, I have registered for 2 evening courses, Tues and Wed night, with the same prof. One is mandatory, the other deals with teaching Popular culture. Right up my Folklore alley............!

That will make Tues and Wed crazy, with ball and ice hockey falling on the same nights. But it will free up time with wifey, who certainly deserves it after this summer. I think the hump on my back is worse after staring at a computer screen all summer! I need to stand up straight again!

Considering the fact I'll probably be subbing for another year, I can do 2 more courses in the Winter semester and finish a semester ahead of schedule. Of course, I'd rather have a job and do one course a semester!

Dulcie Jane Combden R.I.P.

Last Wednesday morning my paternal grandmother passed away at 88 years old. Thankfully it was quick, peaceful, and in the arms of my father and aunt at my aunt's house.

It came as a surprise to all of us but the family was happy nan passed at this time. She got to see her granddaughter Amy get married, she visited the family home on Fogo Island one more time and saw many visitors, and she joined pop in eternity before dad went up north again to teach.

I was very close to her, from visiting each summer on Barr'd Islands, living with her for 2 years when I went to community college in Lewisporte, to seeing her every time I went to Baytona. Even though she "loved her boys", nan loved all her family equally. As I got to know my older cousins better, they told me what it was like to visit our grandparents when they were younger.

It was hectic at our house, with relatives and family coming from Alberta, Ontario and all parts of the island. With the sadness came a sense of peace, but I'll miss her beautiful green eyes and smile. Loves ya nan.

Here are just a few pictures:
Nan and dad in the 60's. She was bigger, dad was smaller. :)

Pop, nan and me on the steps of 'da house' on Barr'd Islands in the early 70's.

She laughed all the way through this dance, and loved it.

Now I Know Why I'm Clumsy

I am one of those people that is always bumping into things, having bruises, terrible night vision, hates strong patterns in fabrics, and NEVER sees the hidden picture in one of those blasted 3-D posters.

No, I am not a drunk or meth head, I have strabimus. I found out today that I am part of 2% of the population who has this condition. Don't worry, the doc said I ain't that special. ha

Losing my sight is one of my greatest fears. My paternal grandfather was blind before he died, and seeing how slowly losing his vision prevented him from taking his daily walks was heart-breaking. I wouldn't wish that on anyone.

I have been wearing glasses for most of my life. It started when I was three. The doc told my folks if I wore glasses, it would take the 'turns' out of my eyes (I was cross-eyed).

See dorky pic #1 & #2:

Finally, at the end of Grade 9 I saw a specialist in Gander, who informed my folks that wearing glasses did nothing, that I needed surgery. Oh, and I needed to wear a patch over my dominant eye to strengthen my weak (lazy. ha) one. Great times.

From the first day of that summer and the first three months of grade 10 I was a friggin pirate. Social life with girls was non-existent (I'm blaming it on the patch, not of lack of social skills!) and playing sports with a nasty blind side caused a few bumps.

After the doc cut, moved, and stitched BOTH eyes, I was bloodshot for three weeks. Teachers kept asking me, "Are you OK?" Even today, I look like I am tired or drunk/stoned most of the time (no comments, please).

So today, after the doc explained my medical condition, and that I'll have to deal with the clumsiness and lack of depth perception all my life, I asked him, "Why am I decent at passing in hockey and basketball, but I'm a terrible shot?"

Apparently, because my teammates are moving along with me, it is OK when I pass. But because the net/rim is fixed, my brain has problems analyzing as I am moving and shooting. Well, I'm sure the boys will understand that the next time I miss an open net or I shoot an air ball.

Back at bumping into things. Or my Masters!

Summer of Weddings: Post 2

Here are some pictures of the weekend Wood and I were in Halifax to attend Mike's wedding. It was a small service, with about 40 people, held on a patio of a swanky downtown hotel. Wood and I were the Newfoundland representatives. Oh my.

It was only about 30 minutes before 'dead man walking' time. Yet the three of us were drinking beer (raiding the minibar at $6.50 a can!) and shooting sh*t. Something like Wood's wedding, when we went out for takeout (I think it was chicken) less than a hour before Wood said his vows.

Here I am on the phone, with some misses in the bridal party telling me the flowers are ready downstairs- really, who cares?!

The food at the reception was great, but more importantly, there were complimentary beer tickets! Bonus: the servers put the moblie bar right behind our table! So as the night went on, we felt really good.

The next morning, feelling "beer heavy," Wood and I stuffed ourselves.

Oh Canada, we stand on guard with thee...! I think Wood was a bit surprised when this guard did not respond to his comment, "Gee, you must find it really hot."

I....can't...get...it..in!

The Halifax Citadel Fort was a great place to visit.

Another Summer of Weddings: Post 1

So far I have went to two weddings this summer - one in rural Newfoundland and the other in downtown Halifax. Needless to say they were very different, but equally as fun.

Cousin Amy finally (haha) got married to Andrew in a lovely ceremony. Here are a few pictures taken by sis Chantel with her trusty digital camera:

There was a bit of drama during the nupitals as my wife really needed to pee minutes before she was to sing. It was very funny (to me) as we slipped out to the loo and back again. My poor Aunt Phyllis thought she was sick and wondered who was going to sing! Anyway, she did a great job singing.......as always.

Here I am, striking my "pimp pose in da purple shirt" with sisters.

The dance was in Grand Falls, at the Legion. Good food, good service, cold beer, and music by the 'Big D Sounds.' Nan, at 87, was in the thick of things.

And my parents were certainly having a good time....

...and I think I had a TOO good of a time!

Sister's Birthday

Today is my siter's 31st birthday. Only being 3 years younger than me, we fought quite often growing up. But during the past couple of years we have gotten closer, even friends. So here are a few pics of our lives together. Hopefully she'll still speak to me after this!

The ONLY photo EVER with me wearing a Leafs jersey!

Happy Birthday Charlene!
